Mas-Cabardès, a village of timeless charm

The beautiful village of Mas-Cabardès (Occitanie region, Aude department) is known not only for its medieval castle and its remarkable industrial and religious heritage, but also for its authentic charm, its narrow lanes, stone stairways and old half-timbered houses.

The 13th-century medieval castle

The castle, which dominates the village and watches over the Orbiel valley, dates from the 13th century. It originally comprised two floors, a chapel, living quarters and a prison, all protected by walls and towers. At the end of the 18th century, it was dismantled, its materials sold and its grounds divided into gardens.

A remarkable religious heritage

The village also boasts a remarkable religious heritage, including the Church of Saint-Étienne dating from the 12th century, listed as a historic monument in 1926, and a spectacular 16th-century cross, classified in 1933.

From Salsigne gold to a village reborn

Mas-Cabardès was once primarily a miners' village, built around the Salsigne mine which produced gold, iron, copper, lead and silver. The village thrived, home to tanneries and cloth makers, but as the mines closed and craft industries declined, many houses fell empty and shops shut their doors. Today, the village is coming back to life, drawing tourists, nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike, and its houses are being lovingly restored. Just steps from our cottage, the traditional village shop 'Chez Denis' stocks the essentials: seasonal fruit and vegetables, cured meats and cheeses. In the surrounding villages you'll also find shops, markets and restaurants where you can savour the local truffles in season.

At the heart of the Montagne Noire

Nestled at the heart of the Montagne Noire, surrounded by hills, garrigue and vineyards, Mas-Cabardès sits at an altitude of 340 metres, bringing natural coolness in summer and a gentle pace of life in winter.
