A natural park between two worlds

The Montagne Noire: Where Atlantic Meets Mediterranean

The Montagne Noire — Black Mountain in English — is the southernmost massif of the Massif Central, rising to 1211 metres at the Pic de Nore. It forms a dramatic natural boundary between the Atlantic-influenced north (chestnut forests, cool streams, meadows) and the Mediterranean south (garrigue, vineyards, sun-scorched limestone). This dual character gives the area an extraordinary biodiversity and a landscape that changes dramatically within just a few kilometres.

The gîte sits in the village of Mas-Cabardès at an elevation of 350 metres, at the precise junction between these two worlds. The Orbiel river gorge — carved through ancient schist and granite — runs just below the village, offering natural swimming pools fed by mountain springs that stay refreshing even in the height of summer. Above the village, dense forests of chestnut and oak climb toward the crests, giving way to open moorland and panoramic viewpoints at altitude.

The Montagne Noire is designated as a Natura 2000 protected zone, home to rare orchids, golden eagles, otters in the mountain streams and red deer on the forested ridges. It is one of the least-visited natural areas in southern France despite its extraordinary beauty — which means the trails are quiet, the rivers uncrowded and the medieval villages genuinely unspoilt.

Hiking, cycling & swimming

Trails, Rivers and Cathar Castles on Your Doorstep

The Cathar Trail (GR367 / Sentier Cathare) passes through the area, connecting 12 stages across 250 km of wild Languedoc landscape. Hikers can access the trail from the village to explore the section between Lastours and Caunes-Minervois — a full-day route through gorges, vineyards and medieval villages. For those who prefer shorter walks, signed local loops depart directly from Mas-Cabardès: the Clamoux Gorge trail (8 km, easy), the Cabardès ridge route (14 km, moderate) and several forest walks to natural pools.

The GR36 long-distance trail crosses the ridgeline above the village, offering exceptional views over the Aude plain and, on clear days, the Pyrenees. Mountain bikers will find the area equally rewarding: the descent from the Pic de Nore to Mas-Cabardès is one of the great technical MTB runs of the Aude. Gravel cyclists will love the quiet D-roads through the wine villages of the Cabardès AOC appellation.

The Lastours castles — four Cathar fortresses perched on a rocky ridge 20 minutes from the gîte — are the most spectacular in the Aude after Peyrepertuse. They can be visited on foot (a 2-hour hike from the village of Lastours) or by car to the panoramic viewpoint. The nearby Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage canal completed in 1681, offers cycling along shaded towpaths between Carcassonne and Béziers — flat, family-friendly and beautiful.

The property

A Stone House Designed for Long Summer Stays

The gîte is a genuine 18th-century village house, not a purpose-built holiday let. It has the quirks and charms of an authentic Aude farmhouse: exposed stone walls, heavy oak beams, a vaulted cellar (now used for storage), and a stone courtyard that faces south-west for maximum afternoon sun. The house was comprehensively renovated in 2022, with new plumbing, electrical installation, insulation and kitchen, while preserving the original floors and architectural features.

The sleeping configuration suits a group of 8 adults or a family: one ground-floor double bedroom (king-size), two first-floor twin rooms and one family room with a double bed and two single bunk beds. Two bathrooms (one with bath, one with walk-in shower), plus a separate WC. The living room has a wood-burning stove for spring and autumn stays when evenings turn cool. The kitchen is fully equipped: large American fridge-freezer, induction hob, oven, microwave, Nespresso machine, dishwasher and ample crockery and cookware for 10.

Outside, the wisteria-covered courtyard has a large plancha BBQ (gas), a teak dining table seating 10, sun loungers and a traditional stone bread oven (decorative). The house is 5 minutes' walk from the village bakery and 10 minutes from the Orbiel river for morning swims. A Type 2 EV charging point (7kW) is available in the parking area at no extra charge.

Frequently asked questions

Your Questions About the Montagne Noire Rental

What is the Montagne Noire and how does it compare to other areas of the South of France?

The Montagne Noire is a smaller, wilder and far less crowded alternative to the Pyrenees or the Cévennes. It offers similar forest landscapes, mountain trails and clean rivers but is much more accessible from Carcassonne and the Mediterranean coast. Temperatures are 5–8°C cooler than on the coast in summer, making it ideal for hiking and outdoor activities without the oppressive heat of July and August in Provence or the Côte d'Azur.

Can we swim in natural rivers near the gîte?

Yes — the Orbiel river (10 min walk from the gîte) has several natural swimming pools with clear water. The most popular spot is the pool at the foot of the Lastours castles, easily reachable by a short walk through the gorge. The Clamoux river also has swimming spots along its valley. Water quality is generally excellent throughout the summer (verified by the local health authority each year).

Is there a supermarket nearby?

The nearest supermarkets are in Conques-sur-Orbiel (15 min, small Spar) and Carcassonne (35 min, Carrefour, Leclerc). The village bakery is open daily (closed Wednesday afternoon). A weekly market takes place in Mas-Cabardès on Sunday mornings in July and August. We recommend doing a main shop in Carcassonne on arrival day.

Can we bring a dog?

Pets are welcome on request (please let us know before booking). Dogs must be kept on a lead in the village and courtyard. The area is excellent for dog walking — the forest trails above the village are quiet and dog-friendly. Note that the Cathar castles (Lastours, Peyrepertuse) do not allow dogs inside the perimeter.
