With nearly 3 million visitors a year, Carcassonne is one of the most visited medieval sites in Europe. In July and August, the streets within the walls are saturated by 10 a.m., restaurants are fully booked, car parks overflow. Hotels inside the Cité charge rates that few families or groups can afford — often over €200 per room in high season.
Our cottage offers a smart alternative: 25 minutes by car separate Mas-Cabardès from Carcassonne. You can visit the Cité in the morning before the tourist crowds arrive (get there before 9 a.m., the ramparts are deserted), or in the evening after 6 p.m. to enjoy the light-and-sound show in July–August. Then you come back to sleep in the absolute peace of a village of 186 inhabitants.
The result: you enjoy everything that makes Carcassonne magical, without the downsides. And at a significantly lower price than staying on-site.
Carcassonne means mass tourism, souvenir shops, crowds — but also breathtaking medieval architecture, world-class museums and unrivalled summer entertainment. Mas-Cabardès is the counterpoint: 186 inhabitants, silent stone lanes, the local grocery store where you end up sitting down for a chat, the community café where the locals meet in the evenings.
Our 18th-century house has as much architectural character as any building within the walls — terracotta floor tiles, dressed stone, an old staircase — at a noticeably lower cost. The shaded courtyard, meals on the plancha, nights with no sound but the crickets: that is the real Occitania.
By car from Carcassonne: follow the D118 towards Mazamet, then the D101. Allow 25 minutes. The road is clear and scenic — it follows the Orbiel river through gorges before climbing up to the village. Easy parking in Mas-Cabardès.
From the A61 motorway (Toulouse–Narbonne): exit Carcassonne-Ouest, then D118 to Mas-Cabardès. From Toulouse: 1h15. From Barcelona: 3 hours (A7 then A61). From Paris by TGV: 5 hours to Carcassonne, then 25 minutes by car (hire available at the station).
Carcassonne Salvaza Airport receives direct flights from London, Manchester, Bristol, Dublin, Edinburgh, Frankfurt and several other European cities. Allow 30 minutes to the cottage. Plenty of car hire options at the airport.
Our cottage is far more than a base for Carcassonne. Just 4 km away, the castles of Lastours rival the Cité in romance — without the crowds. At 54 km, Lagrasse is listed among the most beautiful villages in France, with its still-active medieval abbey. At 31 km, Montolieu, the "Village of Books", with dozens of second-hand booksellers in old stone houses.
The Haute Vallée de l'Aude opens to the south: Alet-les-Bains (60 km) with its Roman thermal baths, Limoux and its sparkling blanquette wine (30 km), Rennes-le-Château (70 km) with its romantic mystery. Closer by, the Rennes-les-Bains thermal spa offers thermal treatments and sulphur baths in unspoilt surroundings.
And of course, the Montagne Noire is right on your doorstep: lakes, hiking, caving, farmers' markets. You won't have time to see everything in a week.
Our cottage is rated 5/5 on Google by our first visitors. The feedback invariably highlights three things: the authentic charm of the house, the quality of the welcome, and the richness of the region — which many discover for the first time and promise to come back and explore.

By car via the D118 from the village: 25 minutes. The road is pleasant, no motorway. Perfect for a morning/evening shuttle: visit Carcassonne at your own pace and come back to peace and quiet.
A car is essential in this area — public transport to Mas-Cabardès is inadequate. We can recommend car hire companies in Carcassonne (train station, airport) if needed.
Absolutely. The "La Cité en Fête" light-and-sound show in summer transforms the ramparts into a fantastic spectacle. The Cité is also far more beautiful after 6 p.m. when the tour coaches have left. You then drive back to sleep peacefully at Mas-Cabardès — 25 minutes.
Yes. Mas-Cabardès is a village of 186 inhabitants. The only sound at night is the crickets in summer or the wind in the chestnut trees in autumn. No nightclub, no crowds. That is precisely why our guests come back.
