Local Hiking Loops Directly from Mas-Cabardès

The village of Mas-Cabardès is an ideal base for hiking in the Black Mountain, with signed trails departing directly from the village square. The Clamoux Gorge loop (8 km, ~3 hours, easy) is the most popular local walk: it follows the clear mountain river downstream through dense chestnut forest, passing natural swimming pools and ruined mills before climbing back to the village through vineyards. A perfect morning walk before an afternoon swim.

For something more demanding, the Cabardès Ridge route (14 km, ~5 hours, moderate) climbs steadily from the village through the forest to the crests of the Montagne Noire, where views extend in all directions over the Aude plain, the Pyrenees and — on clear days — the distant glitter of the Mediterranean. The ridge path connects to the Pic de Nore (1211 m), the summit of the Montagne Noire, accessible from the crests in a further 2 hours.

Shorter options include the Lastours gorge walk (1 hour each way), which follows the Orbiel river downstream to the foot of the four Cathar castles — a spectacular walk combining nature and history. The trail is mostly flat and follows the river closely, with several opportunities to swim along the way. We keep an up-to-date map of all local signed trails at the gîte, available on arrival.

Long-distance trails

The Cathar Trail (GR367) and the GR36 Ridge Route

The Cathar Trail — officially designated GR367 — is one of the great long-distance walks of southern France. Its 250 km and 12 stages link the Mediterranean coast at Port-la-Nouvelle to the town of Foix in Ariège, passing through the heartland of the Cathar heresy: the castles of Quéribus, Peyrepertuse, Puivert and Montségur. The route passes through our area on the Lastours–Caunes-Minervois stage, making the gîte an ideal access point for this section of the trail.

This particular stage (approximately 22 km, 7–8 hours) traverses the Orbiel gorge, climbs to the Cabardès plateau and descends through vineyards to the schist village of Caunes-Minervois, famous for its red marble used in Versailles. The trail offers magnificent views of the Lastours castles from above — a perspective that photographs alone cannot capture. Hikers who wish to complete several consecutive stages can use the gîte as a base, with car logistics organised on request.

The GR36 is a different experience entirely: a high-level traverse of the Montagne Noire from north to south, running along the crest between 700 and 1000 metres altitude. The section accessible from the gîte (approximately 2 hours' climb to reach the ridge) offers exceptional views on both sides — Mediterranean to the south, Atlantic foothills to the north. Mountain lakes Laprade and Montagnès, formed by the Montagne Noire's granite geology, are located near the crests and are accessible on day hikes from the village.

Nature & seasons

Wildlife, Mountain Lakes and the Best Seasons for Hiking

The Black Mountain shelters remarkable wildlife across all seasons. Golden eagles and booted eagles are regular sights above the crests — their wingspans unmistakable as they circle the thermals in the afternoon heat. Red deer graze the forest clearings at dawn and dusk; roe deer are common throughout the year. The mountain streams are home to otters (rarely seen but present) and freshwater crayfish. In spring, the calls of cuckoos and nightingales fill every valley.

Botanically, the Montagne Noire is exceptional: over 30 species of wild orchids bloom between April and June on the dry limestone grasslands and in the forest clearings. The military orchid, bee orchid, pyramidal orchid and purple orchis are all present in large numbers on the lower slopes. Higher up, the Scots pine and beech forests harbour chanterelles, porcini and hen-of-the-woods mushrooms in autumn — a paradise for foragers.

The best seasons for hiking: spring (April–June) for orchids, birdlife and cool temperatures; autumn (September–October) for foliage, mushrooms and golden light. Summer (July–August) is excellent for high-altitude walks (crests are 6–8°C cooler than the valley) but hot on the lower paths — start early and carry plenty of water. Winter brings occasional snow to the crests and frosty but clear days on the lower trails — peaceful and atmospheric, with the hunting season adding colour to weekends.

Frequently asked questions

Your Questions About Hiking in the Black Mountain

Do I need a guide to hike in the Montagne Noire?

The signed trails (GR, GRP, local balisage) do not require a guide as long as you carry a map or GPS track. The trails are well-maintained and clearly marked. For off-trail hiking in the gorges or technical terrain, a licensed mountain guide is recommended. We can put you in contact with local certified guides (BAPAAT / Accompagnateur en montagne) who operate in the Cabardès area. For the Cathar Trail, no guide is needed — detailed topoguides are available in bookshops in Carcassonne.

Where can I download GPS tracks for the local trails?

Wikiloc and Komoot have extensive coverage of the Montagne Noire — search for 'Mas-Cabardès' or 'Montagne Noire Aude'. The IGN Géoportail app provides 1:25000 topographic maps of all trails. We also keep a selection of printed IGN maps at the gîte for guests to use. The Pays Cathare tourist office in Carcassonne publishes a free paper trail guide covering the main signed routes.

Is the hiking suitable for beginners?

The Clamoux Gorge loop (8 km, easy) is perfectly suitable for beginners and families with children aged 7+. It has minimal elevation gain and follows clear river valley paths. The ridge route and Cathar Trail sections require a higher level of fitness and good walking shoes. Beginners should avoid the crests in July and August unless they start before 8am. We are happy to advise on trail selection based on your group's fitness level.

Can we combine hiking with visits to Cathar castles?

Absolutely — this is the essence of walking in the Pays Cathare. The Lastours castles (20 min by car from the gîte) can be reached on foot from the gîte via the Orbiel gorge (2 hours each way). Peyrepertuse and Quéribus castles are best reached by car (45–60 min), then hiked to from the car park at the base. The Cathar Trail itself passes within sight of multiple castles — the Lastours section is the most accessible from the gîte.
