Holidays with large families or groups of friends have been enjoying a real revival in recent years. Sharing the same roof for a week creates a bond that separate hotel rooms simply cannot: shared meals, evenings in the courtyard, days planned at your own pace. A large cottage in the Aude is exactly what you need.
Financially, the equation is unbeatable. At 155 € per night for eight guests, the cost per person drops to around 19 € — less than a roadside hotel room. And unlike a hotel, you have a full kitchen, a private courtyard and all the space you need to truly unwind.
The Aude is one of the most accessible departments in southern France: the A61 motorway from Toulouse or Barcelona, Carcassonne airport 30 km away, and the Paris–Carcassonne TGV line. Beyond the walls of Carcassonne, you will find authentic countryside untouched by mass tourism.
Built in the 18th century at the heart of the medieval village of Mas-Cabardès, our family home is far from a typical "rural gîte". It was once the home of a weaving family: stone walls, terracotta and travertine floors, generous ceiling heights. Every room tells a story.
On the ground floor, a large dining room seats all eight guests around a monastery-style table. The fully equipped kitchen (oven, dishwasher, coffee machine, outdoor plancha) is designed for cooking as a group. Upstairs, four independent double bedrooms ensure everyone's privacy. The travertine bathroom with walk-in shower completes the picture.
The stone courtyard is the true heart of the house in summer: aperitifs at dusk, meals under the stars, evenings that stretch on effortlessly. The village shop and community café are two minutes on foot.
The Lastours castles are 4 km away. These four Cathar fortresses perched on their rocky ridge can be visited as a group at a reduced rate — book a guided tour to understand the historical context. In July and August, the Son et Lumière night show is unforgettable.
The Cité de Carcassonne (25 km, UNESCO-listed) is the region's must-see. To avoid the July queues, arrive before 9am or after 5pm. There are plenty of cassoulet restaurants within the walls — book ahead for a group of eight.
For nature days, the Montagne Noire lakes are less than 15 km away: Lac de Laprade for swimming and fishing, Lac des Montagnès for total peace and quiet. The enchanted market at Brousses-et-Villaret (Tuesday evenings in season) brings together craftspeople, local producers and musicians in an exceptional village. The Cabardès cooperative winery offers AOC wine tastings with views over the Montagne Noire — the perfect end to a full day.
Air conditioning — essential in July and August when nights are warm. Electric heating takes over in the shoulder seasons, making the Montagne Noire enjoyable all year round. The EV charging point is increasingly appreciated by groups travelling from afar.
In the courtyard, the plancha grill turns every evening into a feast. The indoor kitchen is equipped for serious cooking: oven, dishwasher, coffee machine, spacious fridge. Parking is easy in the village — plenty of room for several cars without stress. For families with children, the village is safe and quiet.
The travertine bathroom with walk-in shower preserves the character of the house — and for eight people on holiday, the natural rhythm of lazy family mornings is perfectly suited to it.
Our cottage costs 155 € per night, which works out at around €19 per person. The local market runs between €150 and €250/night for equivalent capacity. Our rate includes all charges (electricity, water, internet).
Yes: Lastours castles offer family-friendly visits, the Montagne Noire lakes provide supervised swimming in summer, and the local markets are a real discovery for children. The village itself is safe and peaceful, with a playground.
The house is on several levels with a stone staircase. It is not wheelchair accessible. For any specific question about accessibility, please contact us directly: we will do our best to find the right solution.
Absolutely. The large dining room is perfect for group meals, and the shaded courtyard with plancha is ideal for convivial evenings. We can advise on logistics based on your needs.
We recommend a full week to make the most of the region: Carcassonne, the Cathar castles, the Montagne Noire and the remarkable villages each deserve a full day to themselves.
