Space, safety & comfort

A Family House with Room for Everyone

Family holidays require space, safety and flexibility — and this 18th-century stone house delivers all three. With 4 bedrooms sleeping up to 8 guests (one king double, two twin rooms and one family room with a double and bunk beds), the house comfortably accommodates two families travelling together, or a family with grandparents. The large ground-floor living room means everyone can gather without feeling cramped, and the enclosed stone courtyard provides a safe outdoor space where small children can play freely.

The village of Mas-Cabardès is ideal for families: it has almost no through traffic (the main road bypasses the village), making it safe for children to explore on foot. The village bakery, open daily, makes the morning croissant run a pleasure. The Orbiel river is a 10-minute walk away, with clear natural swimming pools — the favourite spot for local children during the long summer afternoons.

The kitchen is stocked with everything a family needs: highchair, extra crockery, large cooking pots, a reliable dishwasher. A cot is available on request. The house has air conditioning in all four bedrooms — essential for sleeping comfortably during hot July and August nights. Two bathrooms (bath + shower) and a separate WC ensure morning queues are kept to a minimum.

Adventures for all ages

Castles, Rivers and Trails: Activities Children Love

The Lastours castles, perched on a dramatic rocky ridge 20 minutes from the gîte, are guaranteed to capture children's imaginations. Four Cathar fortresses — Cabaret, Surdespine, Quertinheux and Tour Régine — rise above the Orbiel gorge like something from a storybook. The panoramic viewpoint (reached by a 10-minute walk) gives an extraordinary view of all four castles at once. Inside the perimeter, children can explore the ruins freely; the site has a good visitor centre with an interactive history trail.

For younger children, the natural swimming pools of the Orbiel are the highlight of any summer visit. The water is clean, clear and shallow in many places — perfect for paddling and safe swimming for children who are not yet confident in open water. The gorge walking path between Mas-Cabardès and Lastours takes about 1 hour each way through shade and beside the river, with multiple dipping points along the route.

Older children and teenagers will enjoy the mountain bike trails of the Montagne Noire (bike hire in Carcassonne), the cave visit at Limousis (25 min, illuminated underground lake), kayaking on the Aude river, and the Carcassonne citadel — whose towers, drawbridges and ramparts make medieval history suddenly vivid. The Vulcania nature park is 2.5 hours away for a full-day excursion. Local summer festivals (the Médiévales de Carcassonne in July) add cultural colour to a stay.

Sample programme

A Perfect 7-Day Family Holiday in Cathar Country

Day 1 (Arrival): Settle in, explore the village on foot, evening plancha BBQ in the courtyard. Day 2: Morning swim in the Orbiel, afternoon at the Lastours castles (panoramic viewpoint + site visit). Day 3: Full day in Carcassonne — citadel in the morning, bastide and Canal du Midi walk in the afternoon, ice cream in the lower town. Day 4: Family hike on the Clamoux gorge loop (8 km, easy, river swimming along the route).

Day 5: Cave visit at Grotte de Limousis (25 min) — children love the underground lake — then wine tasting for parents in a Cabardès vineyard while children play in the courtyard. Day 6: Drive to Minerve (40 min) — the dramatic gorge perched village — for a morning visit, then swim at the Lac de l'Orbiel in the afternoon. Day 7 (Departure): Sunday market in the village (July–August), final croissants from the bakery, pack the car.

This itinerary mixes castle visits, outdoor activities and relaxation at the right pace for families with children aged 5–16. Toddlers and babies are best suited to the river swimming, village exploration and the easier walks. The house's private courtyard means babies can nap safely while parents relax with a glass of local Cabardès wine — one of the South of France's most underrated appellations.

Frequently asked questions

Your Questions About Our Family Holiday Home

Is the house safe for toddlers and young children?

The enclosed stone courtyard has no open water and is fully surrounded by walls — children can play outside safely. Inside, the staircase has a wooden banister, and a stair gate is available on request. The stone floors are level throughout the ground floor. The village has almost no through traffic. The Orbiel river (10 min walk) has shallow areas suitable for toddlers with adult supervision.

Can we book for two families travelling together?

Yes — the house is ideal for two families. The four bedrooms are on two floors, giving each family a degree of privacy. The two bathrooms and separate WC allow independent morning routines. The long dining table seats 10, and the courtyard has enough space for 10–12 people to eat comfortably. We regularly host two families sharing the week.

What age are the activities best suited to?

The Lastours castles and Orbiel river swimming are suitable for children from age 4 upward. The Carcassonne citadel is great for ages 6+. The Clamoux gorge hike is easy enough for children aged 7+ who are confident walkers. For teenagers, mountain biking, kayaking and the longer Cathar Trail sections are available. The Grotte de Limousis cave visit (25 min) is suitable from age 5.

Is there a washing machine for longer stays?

Yes — a full-size washing machine is in the utility room adjacent to the kitchen. A dryer is not available, but the courtyard has a drying rack and the summer sun dries laundry quickly. For a week-long stay with children, this is usually sufficient. An iron and ironing board are also available.
